Privacy Policy

NextSelf — language learning app

Effective date: 8 October 2026

In short

1. Who is responsible

NextSelf is developed and published by Birol Şengün. “We” in this policy means Birol Şengün. For any question or request: privacy@getnextself.com.

2. What data we process

Account: your email address and password. Your password is stored hashed by Google Firebase Authentication; we cannot see it.

Learning progress: the languages you learn, completed lessons and tests, XP and levels, daily quests and goal, study time, vocabulary notebook and review schedule, placement test answers (question, right/wrong, response time), reminder times and interface preferences.

Optional profile data: the speaker gender you choose for grammar (for forms like Russian «я пошёл / я пошла»; a “prefer not to say” option exists) and your learning goal.

Technical: a server timestamp used to check that your device clock is correct.

We do not ask for or collect your name, phone number, location, contacts or photos.

3. Why we process it

Only to provide the service: to let you sign in, keep your progress safe and in sync across devices, and adapt lessons and reviews to you. Legal basis: performance of our agreement with you (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b); KVKK Art. 5(2)(c)).

4. What stays on your device

A copy of your progress, your sound settings and the voice packs you download are stored only on your device. Voice packs contain no personal data.

Reminders are scheduled locally on your device and are never sent to a server.

5. Microphone and speech recognition

The microphone is used only in speaking exercises and only with your permission. NextSelf does not store your voice and does not send it to us.

To turn your speech into text, the speech recognition service of your device's operating system is used (Apple on iPhone, Google on Android). Depending on your device, audio may be sent to that service for processing; in that case Apple's or Google's privacy policy applies. Dictation in some writing exercises runs on the device only.

6. Service providers

Google Firebase (Authentication and Cloud Firestore) stores your account and progress on our behalf. Its servers may be located outside your country; this transfer is necessary to provide the service.

GitHub Pages: lesson audio files are downloaded from here. Like any web server, GitHub may keep the IP address of requests in short-term security logs. Downloading audio is not linked to your account.

There are no ad networks, analytics or tracking tools, and no sale of data. If ads or a paid membership are added in the future, this policy will be updated in advance and announced in the app.

7. How long we keep it

As long as your account exists. When you delete your account, your cloud progress and account are deleted immediately; they are also removed from Google's backups within Google's own retention periods.

8. Deleting your account and data

In the app: Profile → Settings (gear) → Delete my account. After you enter your password and confirm, your account, all your cloud progress and the record on the device are permanently deleted.

If you can't access the app: send an email from your registered address to privacy@getnextself.com with the subject “account deletion”. Your account and data will be deleted within 30 days and you will be informed.

If you only want to reset your progress (and keep the account): Settings → Reset all progress.

9. Your rights

Under the GDPR and Turkish KVKK you have the right to access, correct, delete or port your data and to object to processing. Write to privacy@getnextself.com; we reply within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

10. Age requirement

To create a NextSelf account you must be of the legal age for digital services in your country (13–16 in most countries) or have the permission of a parent or guardian. Because the app has no ads or tracking, no user's data is ever used for marketing. If we learn that data was collected from someone under that age without permission, we will delete the account and its data; parents can request this using the methods above.

11. Security

All connections are encrypted (HTTPS). Only the owner of an account can access its cloud progress record.

12. Changes

If we update this policy, we change the effective date and announce important changes in the app.
